Youth Ministry

The Archdiocese of San Francisco supports youth ministry programs that foster the catechesis, moral, and spiritual formation of young people in Middle School through High School.

Our Goals

Guided by the USCCB’s document, Renewing the Vision (1997), our ministry has three goals:

To empower young people (ages 13-17) to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today;

To draw young people into responsible participation in the life, mission, and work of the faith community;

To foster the personal and spiritual growth of each young person.

To accomplish these goals, we offer training, community, workshops, resources, retreats, and collaboration opportunities for Youth Ministry Leaders within the Archdiocese, as well as training, retreats, catechetical events, leadership opportunities for youth themselves.

Genuine love is demanding. But its beauty lies precisely in the demands it makes. Only those able to make demands on themselves in the name of love can then demand love from others.

Sacred Patterns Fall Renewal Retreat

9:00am – 12:30pm
Cost: $65
Join us for spiritual deepening and renewal at the Mercy Center for a half-day retreat as we come together to pray, engage in contemplative practices, delight in the living world, and encounter the Holy. Together, we’ll harvest the fruits of this past year as we reflect on the sacred patterns at work in our bodies and spiritual lives.

Fall is a time of harvest, transition, and returning inward. What is changing or maturing in you and in your life? What fruits are you collecting or savoring?

This fall half-day retreat will include:

– quiet prayer time, contemplative practices
– art-making
– poetry and reflection
– movement (including labyrinth time)
– a wisdom circle with sharing

We’ll end the session with a nourishing lunch together, provided by the Mercy Center.

The session is $65 and includes lunch and supplies. Bring a friend! We’d love to share this sacred time with you.

Centering Prayer: Praying with Jesus

4:00pm (10/13) – 12:00pm (10/16)
Cost: $375
The prayer that is commonly known as The Lord’s Prayer is one that many memorized as young children. And even though we may recite it often, there is more to this prayer than our English translations have to offer. When approached from its Aramaic roots, the Prayer of Jesus reveals a vision and path of following in the way of Jesus that is both inspiring and imminently practical.

Drawing upon the work of Neil Douglas-Klotz and using a balance of teaching, chanting, sacred movement, guided meditation and Centering Prayer, this time set apart will allow retreatants to enter into a deeper relationship — both with the Prayer of Jesus and following in the way of Jesus.

Retreat Leaders:

Henry Schoenfield, M.Div., PCC is a spiritual director, professional certified coach and UCC pastor. He loves working with individuals as well as facilitating groups and retreats based in the contemplative Christian path.

Carol Squire, after 35 years creating and leading non-profit organizations in Africa and the Indian sub-continent, Carol now devotes her passion and energy to sharing the 4th Way Work, an ancient spiritual path periodically revived by Sufis and 4th Way Teachers, in particular G.I. Gurdjieff. She works with the Gurdjieff Movements and Ideas, somatic and emotional literacy, sound and energy healing,

Heart of Mercy Celebration

6:00pm – 7:00pm

Mercy Retirement and Care Center is celebrating 150 years of senior care in the San Francisco Bay Area and 40 years of seniors helping seniors and the Mercy Brown Bag Program with our virtual Heart of Mercy celebration on October 13, 2022, from 6 pm – 7 pm.

We will thank our donors for supporting the Moving Mercy Forward Capital Campaign and showcase the fantastic improvements to our campus from our multi-million dollar renovation. During the celebration, we will honor our 2022 Heart of Mercy recipients, Christine Whelan and Dorothy Stack, CSJ– Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, and join together to ensure these programs continue for the next 150 years.

Event tickets, sponsorship opportunities and additional information can be found at https://qrco.de/HeartofMercy.

Established in 1872 by the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Retirement and Care Center was founded on a deep sense of faith, dignity, and compassion. In 1907 senior care services relocated from San Francisco to the present five-acre Oakland campus. Since then, more than 10,000 residents have passed through Mercy’s doors. Via a scholarship-type program, Mercy provides care for residents who have outlived their resources. Mercy is the sole Catholic retirement home in the Oakland diocese.

Mercy’s community involvement and care for seniors and vulnerable populations extends well beyond campus borders through programs such as Mercy Brown Bag Program. Notably, Mercy Brown Bag Program provides nutritious food and social connection to more than 8,000 Alameda County low-income, food-insecure seniors. In 2020 Mercy Brown Bag Program was in high demand due to COVID-19 impacts on seniors and made 117,000 home deliveries of grocery bags stuffed with more than 2.3 million pounds of food.

Filipino Ministry’s 10th Annual Gala

5:30pm – 10:00pm
Cost: 100
Join the fun and excitement at the Filipino Ministry’s 10th Annual Fundraising Gala, October 16, 5:30 PM at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in Patrons Hall. This event is the continuation of the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines. The milestone celebration inspires gratitude for the gift of faith Filipinos received 500 years ago and the responsibility of sharing that faith.

Today, more than ever, Filipino-Americans have a reason to celebrate. After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Annual Gala is back. This year’s celebration will feature a musical and cultural extravaganza, showcasing the talent and creativity of our Filipino youth and young adults in the field of music and cultural dance. It will also provide an opportunity to affirm the presence and prominence of Filipino Catholics in the local church and beyond. Today, many parishes in the Archdiocese of San Francisco are led by Filipino pastors, parochial vicars and administrators. Having been entrusted a leadership role in the Archdiocese of San Francisco, the Filipino clergy and the laity have reached a milestone with a strong visible presence. The Gala will celebrate the GIFT OF FAITH the Filipino faithful received 500 years ago and highlight our “unique” contributions to our Archdiocese, our adopted country and throughout the world.

The Filipino Ministry’s Annual Gala is not just a fundraiser…it is the annual gathering of the Filipino community to celebrate our faith, culture and heritage, and promote fellowship with all the faithful of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. By sharing our culture with others, we send a message of hope for unity in diversity not only in our community but across the country and around the world.

Together in Holiness Marriage Retreat

8:30am – 4:00pm
Cost: $40 – $64
Together in Holiness is a marriage enrichment initiative that inspires couples to grow together in holiness and empowers and equips parents to form their children in the Catholic faith. It accomplishes this mission in two complementary ways:

  • An annual, one-day Conference series for couples in dioceses

  • A year-round Formation series for couples in parishes, schools, and small communities

Together in Holiness is unique in that it offers a place of encounter, where God’s plan for marriage and family is proclaimed and a desire for holiness is enkindled in the hearts of married couples. This is complemented by ongoing formation for spouses within a natural community of friends who accompany each other on the path to holiness by providing formation that will help learning take root in daily living.
