Youth Ministry

The Archdiocese of San Francisco supports youth ministry programs that foster the catechesis, moral, and spiritual formation of young people in Middle School through High School.

Our Goals

Guided by the USCCB’s document, Renewing the Vision (1997), our ministry has three goals:

To empower young people (ages 13-17) to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today;

To draw young people into responsible participation in the life, mission, and work of the faith community;

To foster the personal and spiritual growth of each young person.

To accomplish these goals, we offer training, community, workshops, resources, retreats, and collaboration opportunities for Youth Ministry Leaders within the Archdiocese, as well as training, retreats, catechetical events, leadership opportunities for youth themselves.

Genuine love is demanding. But its beauty lies precisely in the demands it makes. Only those able to make demands on themselves in the name of love can then demand love from others.

Levanté 1 Video Retreat

6:00pm (07/10) – 1:00pm (07/15)
Cost: 1000
Levanté 1, the first of Michael Fish’s fascinating new retreat series, is designed to help us recognize the opportunities for personal growth that are often hidden within everyday experiences. With each video session, he provides a springboard inviting fresh perspectives on life’s challenges and rewards.

Born of Michael’s experiences during his arduous and eventful fifth Camino across Spain, Levanté 1 focuses on how simple everyday events hold valuable lessons for living life in the “now.” Each session, each day, offers a separate, distinct experience that can reveal simple, easily overlooked opportunities for us to live more fully in the present and in the presence of the Divine. Amazing and unpredictable, the Levanté journey provided a wealth of wonderful opportunities to see what God can teach us about each and every life experience. Michael uses his remarkable gift of storytelling and metaphor to show us how these experiences can hold the key to opening our hearts to a wider view of our relationship with ourselves, our families and the world around us.

Remembering What You Never Knew: Discovering Your Ancestral Legacies

6:00pm (07/10) – 1:00pm (07/15)
Cost: 1000
For you to be born today from 12 previous generations, you needed 4,094 ancestors over the last 400 years. Think for a moment – How many struggles? How many battles? How many difficulties? How much sadness? How much happiness? How many love stories? How many expressions of hope for the future? – did your ancestors undergo for you to exist in this present moment?

Like the double helix of DNA, history, and genealogy gives us our genetic, sociological, psychological, and spiritual identities. Lived experiences (genealogy) and the reflection on those experiences (history) shape a double helix.

This workshop uses the genogram to connect the stories between these spiral ladders. An annotated family tree, the genogram reveals physical, emotional, spiritual, and vocational hereditary patterns. These patterns form relationships and identify how family history is connected to the larger historical narrative.

“History belongs to the intercessors – those who believe and pray the future into being.” Walter Wink. Intercessory prayer can heal the past so the future can flourish. Using the genogram as a discernment tool shows us what and how to pray.

In preparation for this workshop, identifying at least three generations of your family members, ancestors, or descendants, will be beneficial.

Spiritual Conversations with Children

6:00pm (07/10) – 1:00pm (07/15)
Cost: 1000
Participants will explore what it looks like to host spiritual conversations with children. We will wade into the waters of children’s spirituality and their unique ways of connecting with the Holy. We will consider the various dimensions of the person and how that impacts the spiritual lives of children. We will engage in intentional child-like spiritual practices that are natural to children and explore spiritual listening skills that meet children where they are in their own life with God.

Cost: 1000
In this workshop we will explore the deep connections between spiritual life and action “out” in the world. We will interrogate the idea of a gap between “inside” and “outside,” explore ways to ground our activism in love and faith, and discern our personal paths toward work for social justice.

6:00pm (07/10) – 1:00pm (07/15)
Cost: 1000
In this workshop we will explore the elements of design: lines, shapes, colors and composition as an exercise in discovering how God speaks to us through creativity. We will move from what we think we know…to chaos…back to order. The emphasis is on the process, not the end product, but you may surprise yourself with a masterpiece! No experience is necessary.

We will consider the various dimensions of the person and how that impacts the spiritual lives of children. We will engage in intentional child-like spiritual practices that are natural to children and explore spiritual listening skills that meet children where they are in their own life with God.

Christ of the Forest: Spiritual Practices for Earth Connection

6:00pm (07/17) – 1:00pm (07/22)
Cost: 1000
When Jesus saw that his companions were faltering, he took them to the forests of Mount Hermon for rest and reframing. Both Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’ and recent scientific research reveal how profoundly humans need to experience their interconnection with all creatures. This workshop provides opportunities to explore spiritual practices that foster such interconnection, while also taking note of emerging Christian theologies that support these practices. The workshop will include two sessions of Forest Therapy — a group practice in which participants are guided in a contemplative outdoor walk. (Note that the trails at Mercy Center may be rather rugged, so those who cannot safely join these walks will be offered alternative practices for these times.)

The Art of Sacred Words: Writing As Spiritual Practice

6:00pm (07/17) – 1:00pm (07/22)
Cost: 1000
Just like prayer, meditation, yoga, or chant, writing offers a powerful way to deepen our lives of faith. Spiritual writing is writing that honors process over product. Writing that opens up possibility, asks probing questions, and challenges easy assumptions. Putting our “sacred words” to paper can be a pathway to exploration, confrontation, healing, celebration, and lament. In this generative workshop, we will read and discuss some masterful examples of spiritual writing, and we will do a LOT of writing ourselves, guided by “free-writing” exercises and prompts; meditations on Scripture, poetry, and icons; and collaborative conversation. We will talk about how to begin and sustain a writing practice in the midst of our busy lives. We will experiment with a variety of forms and genres. We will consider how to shape our personal experiences of the numinous, the painful, the mysterious, and the transcendent into writing that draws us closer to God. At the conclusion of the workshop, attendees who wish to share a brief piece of their creative work will be welcome to do so during an “open mic” reading.

This workshop is for anyone who wants to write about their spiritual lives, but needs some support and inspiration to get started, as well as for long-time writers who want to deepen their practice, get a lot of writing done, and benefit from the company of fellow writers. Attendees who like to write longhand should bring a notebook (or plenty of loose-leaf paper) and their favorite pens/pencils. If you wish to compose on laptops or other electronic devices, you are welcome to bring them along.

Spirituality of Dignity

6:00pm (07/17) – 1:00pm (07/22)
Cost: 1000
The Spirituality of Dignity workshop will explore the understanding of dignity through the lenses of scripture, Church tradition, Catholic Social Thought, current events, and personal experience. If the foundation is that we are all created in the image and likeness of God, what does that mean for every aspect of our lives? What gifts does our dignity provide us? What responsibilities and obligations does others’ dignity require?

This workshop will explore these questions as well as look at discernment and moral decision making. This workshop is open to everyone regardless of previous knowledge on the topic. The approach will be discussion based, so engaged hearts and minds are welcome!

Levanté 1 Video Retreat

6:00pm (07/17) – 1:00pm (07/22)

Charting the Synodal Way of Evangelizing Through Baseball

6:00pm – 8:00pm
St. Augustine Church is Hosting a Special Townhall Forum
“Charting the Synodal Way of Evangelizing Through Baseball”
Friday, July 29 @ 6 PM

Father Ray Reyes and the St. Augustine Youth Group (SAYG) are inviting the parishioners of SAC and everyone in the Archdiocese of San Francisco to participate in a special Townhall Forum featuring Father Casey Cole and Father Roberto “Tito” Serrano, also known as the “Bleacher Brothers.” They are Franciscan Friars and stars of the popular YouTube Channel, “Breaking in the Habit.” Following the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi, Father Casey and Father Tito have embarked on an 11-week pilgrimage that started May 19 to visit all 30 major league baseball ballparks, traveling more than 17,000 miles to meet people where they are and preach the good news of Jesus Christ. They will watch the Oakland Athletics play on July 27 and the San Francisco Giants on July 28. The following night they will be the keynote speakers at the Townhall Forum at SAC. Father Ray and SAYG are encouraging everyone to come and engage them in a casual conversation to talk about Family, Vocations, Understanding our Faith Journey and Spirituality of Baseball.

Father Casey and Father Tito met in their sophomore year of formation and bonded over their love for baseball. Eight years ago, they started planning to visit major baseball stadiums around the country to connect with others who share their love for baseball and to get to know the faith and culture of the people they would encounter on their tour. The vision of these young Franciscan friars is to see firsthand how Catholicism has been shaped in each city they visit by the culture and by the different immigrant groups that have come, and to engage them in a dialogue about their hopes and shared vision for a synodal church.

Father Casey said: “St. Francis didn’t just preach in churches. He had a gift of finding God in even the ordinary. For 800 years the Franciscans have continued this legacy. This trip is our way of carrying on what St. Francis started.”
Don’t miss this special gathering. Be part of the Bleacher Brothers’ exciting journey to the new path of evangelization. Father Casey and Father Tito truly epitomize Pope Francis’ vision of synodality conveyed in his apostolic exhortation Christus Vivit: “Together, we can learn from one another, warm hearts and inspire each other’s minds with the light of the Gospel.”

Understanding the Synod on Synodality and Its Importance in Everyday Catholic Life

9:00am – 1:00pm
Please join Fr. Angel N. Quitalig and the Filipino Ministry Consultative Board (FMCB) for a Recollection and General Meeting to be held Saturday, July 30, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Mark Catholic Church in Belmont.

Recollection Theme Background:
In October 2021 Pope Francis formally launched the two-year global consultation process leading to the 2023 Synod on Synodality with a call to “look others in the eye and listen to what they have to say.” The launching took place at the height of the pandemic, and the event almost got buried in the news as global deaths from COVID infections dominated the daily press coverage. What kind of church does the world need today and the years to come? We live in a complex world, with conflicting demands for our attention that Pope Francis in his statement earlier this year expressed concern that people are “losing the ability to listen,” both in the Church and in the public arena.

In February of this year, the Archdiocese of San Francisco launched the diocesan phase of the Synod on Synodality, and all parishes were encouraged to participate in the Disciple Maker Index (DMI) survey administered by the Catholic Leadership Institute (CLI). The synthesis or the result of the survey and listening sessions submitted to USCCB last June revealed that only 22% of Asian American parishioners (Filipinos included) participated in the survey and 14% in the listening sessions. Among the key findings, “there is a hunger for transparency and continued dialogue, but many participants were skeptical that any action may result from this sharing.” Click on this link: Synod – Archdiocese of San Francisco (sfarchdiocese.org) for additional information on the result of the Archdiocesan survey and listening sessions.

In light of these findings, the Filipino Ministry Consultative Board (FMCB) has decided to convene a Recollection and invite the Filipino community of faithful to have a deeper understanding of the Synod on Synodality in order to align with Pope Francis’ call for all the baptized to journey together. Where is the Synod on Synodality leading us? We are called to be on the road together, but where is that road taking us? What is the destination? What is its importance in the daily Catholic life?

Terry O’Neill, the Church of Epiphany’s Coordinator for the Synod on Synodality’s diocesan phase, has graciously accepted FMCB’s invitation to speak on what the three-year process is all about. The rationale behind the theme of the Recollection: Understanding the synodal process is key to participating fully in the mission of the Church.

FMCB welcome and thank the new Vicar for Filipinos, Father Angel N. Quitalig, for being open to give a reflection on the spirituality of Synodality and how we can set ourselves anew for the mission of the Church.

After the Recollection, the General Meeting will immediately follow. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to gather in person once again and enjoy camaraderie with friends and fellow parishioners. RSVP is required for lunch headcount. Please respond no later than Saturday, July 23. Respond to: [email protected] or send text to: 415.336.9193 or 415.317.5481.
