2025 Jubilee Year of Hope

December 2024 – December 2025

“Brothers and sisters, with the opening of the Holy Door we have inaugurated a new Jubilee, and each of us can enter into the mystery of this extraordinary event. Tonight, the door of hope has opened wide to the world. Tonight, God speaks to each of us and says: there is hope also for you! There is hope for each of us.”
– Pope Francis, December 24, 2024

What is a Jubilee Year?

Jubilee Years take their roots from Jewish tradition as a special year of reconciliation, pilgrimage, and coming home. The first Jubilee in the Catholic Church was celebrated in 1300 and over time has continued as a year of pilgrimage and renewal in the Church. Pope Boniface VIII referred to the first Jubilee as a “Holy Year,” since it is a time in which God’s holiness transforms us.

The frequency of Holy Years has changed over time: at first, they were celebrated every 100 years; later, in 1343 Pope Clement VI reduced the gap between Jubilees to every 50 years, and in 1470 Pope Paul II made it every 25 years.

Traditionally, Catholic travel to Rome to enter the four major basilicas through a “Holy Door.” By participating in the Holy Year, one is granted a plenary indulgence.

“Pilgrims of Hope”

The 2025 Jubilee Holy Year celebrates the 2,025th anniversary of the Incarnation of our Lord. Pope Francis has designated the 2025 Holy Year as a time to renew ourselves as “Pilgrims of Hope.”

Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone also spoke on the Jubilee Year and the virtue of Hope at the 2025 Women’s Conference, the first Archdiocesan Jubilee event. Read his homily below!
