Hundreds gather for the Rite of Election in San Francisco

By Catholic San Francisco
On March 9, the Archdiocese of San Francisco celebrated the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption. This significant event marked a pivotal step for more than 650 individuals from 57 parishes—384 candidates and 269 catechumens—on their journey toward full communion with the Catholic Church.
The Rite of Election is a central component of the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA), formerly known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This process guides unbaptized individuals, referred to as catechumens, through evangelization, catechetical instruction, and spiritual formation, culminating in their reception of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist. Concurrently, candidates—those already baptized in another Christian tradition—seek full communion with the Catholic Church.
During the liturgy, catechumens publicly declared their intention to join the Church by signing their names in the Book of the Elect, symbolizing their commitment to the faith. Candidates, accompanied by their sponsors, reaffirmed their desire for full communion, with sponsors attesting to their readiness for the sacraments.
Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone presided over the liturgy, welcoming participants from numerous parishes across the archdiocese. In his homily, he emphasized the profound significance of the Lenten season as a time for spiritual renewal and deeper conversion. He reflected on the traditional Lenten practice of self-denial, highlighting its role in fostering spiritual growth and solidarity with those in need. The Archbishop noted that embracing voluntary sacrifices can lead to a more profound experience of God’s grace and a heightened awareness of the needs of others.
The ceremony concluded with a communal prayer, invoking the Holy Spirit to guide the elect and candidates as they enter the Period of Purification and Enlightenment.
The next phase of preparation for Easter, aligning with the Lenten season, involves intensified spiritual preparation for catechumens and candidates. This period culminates in the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil, where catechumens and candidates fully join the Catholic Church.
