All are welcome to the opening reception of this exhibition featuring works of art by residents of Catholic Charities’ Peter Claver Community, a residential-care facility for formerly homeless individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
The artists’ stunning and powerful works not only explore their imaginations but also demonstrate the effects of their new opportunities for healing, growth, and community. The exhibition runs through February 28, and all artwork is available for purchase.
The opening reception is also a fundraiser, and proceeds will benefit the Peter Claver Community.
Friends of
the Benedict XVI Institute (B16) are invited to register to attend by signing up at the B16 website, above. Executive Director Maggie Gallagher will be at the reception to welcome attendees to this, the first event of 2020 on the B16’s program of exploring the three Catholic essentials of “truth, beauty, and goodness”
Maggie Gallagher says:
"This close to Valentine's Day, make time for the Sacred Heart of Jesus.Honor the great St. Peter Claver who traveled to the Americas to offer help, hope, and healing for enslaved people.
"While studying at the University of Barcelona, Peter Claver wrote in his spiritual journal: 'I must dedicate myself to the service of God until death, on the understanding that I am like a slave.' During the forty years of his ministry in the slave port of Granada, he brought food, medicine and spiritual counsel to victims of human trafficking there. He personally baptized around 300,000 people and heard the confessions of more than 5,000 slaves.
"The Peter Claver Community keeps the great saint’s legacy and memory alive by providing a home and care for 32 previously homeless adults who have disabling HIV/AIDS."
