In 1652, Gian Lorenzo Bernini sculpted Saint Teresa in Ecstasy in marble for the Cornaro Chapel of the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria.
St. Teresa of Ávila (1515 to 1582) was a Spanish noblewoman, a Carmelite nun, a prominent Spanish mystic, religious reformer, author, theologian of the contemplative life and of mental prayer. Pope Paul XVI named her the first female Doctor of the Church.Her writings point the way to the interior of Christian mysticism and Christian contemplative prayer.
Amy Giuliano is a Fellow of the Benedict XVI Insitute. She was trained in theology at the Angelicum in Rome and in art history and digital media at Yale University.
