Victim Offender Education Group (VOEG) Facilitator and Executive Director of Insight Prison Project, a division of Five Keys Schools and Programs

Leonard served over 23 years within California’s jail and prison system for a 15-year-to-life sentence for second degree murder. While incarcerated at San Quentin, Leonard created an interfaith restorative justice roundtable through the Catholic Chapel. Leonard organized a Pastoral Ministry program through the Archdiocese of San Francisco School of Pastoral Leadership. He participated in numerous Insight Prison Project (IPP) programs as a participant and co-facilitator for: Victim Offender Education Group (VOEG), Next Step, the Violence Prevention Program and Facilitator Training. Leonard earned an Associate of Arts Degree from Patten University while incarcerated. Upon release, Leonard married and began studies at the University of San Francisco earning a double major with honors in Finance and Entrepreneurship & Innovation. Leonard was awarded the USF Archbishop Oscar Romero Leadership Award. He served on the board of IPP for over seven years before becoming the executive director in 2018.

∎ PANEL DESCRIPTION:

This panel will discuss the experiences of a survivor who has participated in our Surrogate Survivor Impact Panels as well as a direct Victim Offender Dialogue (VOD), two VOEG graduates, and two VOEG facilitators. Insight Prison Project is a division of Five Keys. The VOEG program is currently being offered at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, Pelican Bay State Prison, R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility, Valley State Prison, California Men’s Colony, California Institution for Men, the California Institution for Women, the San Francisco Juvenile Justice Center, and in four correctional institutions in Colorado. We are currently recruiting to train VOEG facilitators to replicate to the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla, Correctional Training Facility in Soledad, and Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad.
