“The purpose of assessment is not primarily to find shortcomings, so that the stakeholders will lament or complain but to provide stimuli for addressing challenges in an open and transparent way. If improvement is necessary, it can then be planned strategically and implemented prudently.
Assessment, of course, is not an end in itself. It should always be directed toward enhancing a school’s Catholic identity. It ought never to be used as a punitive instrument. Rather, the analysis should lead to measurable strategies to be put in place that would lead a school to deepen its Catholic character, moving it from where it presently is now to where its stakeholders wish it to be in the future. It is a matter of moving from ‘good’ or ‘very good’ to ‘great.’”
Archbishop J. Michael Miller, C.S.B.

Assessment is a kind of institutional examination of conscience that helps schools determine if they actually are doing what they aspire to do. Assessment efforts and instruments that emanate from the Office of Catholic Identity Assessment and Formation are consonant with the spirit of assessment as defined by Archbishop Miller. They are developed in cooperation with personnel from Archdiocesan schools and are closely aligned to the eight WCEA Catholic Identity Standards.
